| Phyllis Beals |
Phyllis Beals is a sculptor, designer, ceramist
and lover of music and theater. Her hats run from the
"classic to flamboyant," and are made by
a hatter who understands (and loves) vintage clothing.
Beals traveled and taught in Europe and Persia. Twiggy
wore one of her hats for a TV promotion and restaurateur
Alice Waters wore one on the Good Morning America TV
show. "Hats have attitude. For me they’re
an easy form of self-expression. Plop one on your head
and you’re instantly transformed," said
Beals. "As Lilly Dache used to say, ‘See,
this is what I am like, or what I would like to be.’ I
make unique oneof- a kind hats that make wearing hats
cool, high fashion, and stylish. My hats allow women
to express their joie de vivre in a witty, colorful,
sophisticated way." If you’re wearing a
Hat by Phyllis, there is no chance that someone else
will turn up in the same hat as you!" The delightful
exuberance of her hats shows off the personality and
the individuality of the wearer; counterbalancing the
mass-produced conformity of fashion today. Each hat
has color, shape, and texture, that combines old world
craftsmanship, to classic forms to wildly flamboyant
exotic ornamentation and folded silk ribbons. The whimsy
and spirit of these hats has a lot to do with her background
in theatre, and her passionate love of music. Like
a good song, each singer (or hat wearer) infuses the
work with their own spirit and style.
