 Mark Mejia of Baron Hats
Mark (a consummate hat lover) apprenticed with legendary
hatter Eddie Baron and then purchased the company.
It grew from a “two sewing machine and one steamer” shop
to a large custom hat company with showrooms in LA,
NYC and Paris.
Mark believes in the present and wants to preserve
the best of the past. He has new methods for cleaning
and repairing classic vintage hats and has seamless
fabric, miniature top hats and Lolita Gothic styles.
“I am constantly improving and growing, bringing
magic to the next generation.” Mark goes to elementary
schools and has children design hats. The teacher picks
the best hat and they make real prototypes. A few students
have gone to college for costume design.
“Every day I am inspired by calls and e-mails
from people all over the world telling me how much
they love hats. They either want a hat or simply talk
about hats, both past, present and future.
This unique “industry” is far from going
the way of the “buggy whip” and is growing
in new and exciting ways! From vintage, to retro, to
new styles and materials, it is inspiring to know I
am helping keep hats alive, grow and prosper!”
Bob Dylan, Johnny Depp and Tito Jackson’s new
tour hats are from Baron. They were in “Eye On
LA,” “Vista LA” and named “Best
Hat Maker of 2009” by Los Angeles Magazine.
Their Green Hat Project converts plastic bottles into
hand woven Fedoras and newsprint into hats (and donate
to educational environmental organizations).
