Oska Truffaux Oska Truffaux held a series of exhibitions of thousands
of strangers wearing his Panama hats in the back of
his 1954 Baby Austin. This Popularized Truffaux hats
and made people think of the pictures as selfportrait
hat art.
He also wanted to teach people how transformative
a good hat can be for their appearance by photographing
people wearing a hat and recording the change. To do
this he designed a portable photo-booth and collected
15 000 photographs of people wearing his hats. They
also shared the images online and had a series of photographic
exhibitions. These images were acclaimed by the press.
“I have collected vintage hats for 20 years, deconstructed
them, adapted, changed, loved and played with them. While
making a documentary on tribal sleep cultures in Ecuador,
I came away with an intense passion for Panama hat making
- and it has grown from there for the last 2 years.
