FUNERAL
FASHION GOES MAINSTREAM
In case you missed it here, its official, the
mainstream media has finally noticed that hipsters
are enamored with the skull and crossbones logo.
In the “USA Weekend Magazine” there
was an article about this funeral fashion icon,
called “X marks the spot: Skull and crossbones
go upscale.” (We said it first).
Weighing in on this creepy trend is Roopal Patel,
the senior fashion director from Bergdorf Goodman:
“In the 80’s, skulls defined you as
rebellious, gothic or part of a biker gang. Now
skulls no longer seem threatening.”
The article hails the white gold diamond-eyed
skull cuff links (for black tie events) and also
highlights the skull and crossbones trimmed knit
caps from Zola Hats. “It’s Chanel
meets Johnny Depp meets Sid Vicious. The skull
and crossbones epitomize that,” said Zola
designer Kathy Poncher. Pictured in the article
is the “Sean” hat from Zola that has
crystal-studded or hammered silver skulls on the
front of a knit cap.
Apparently too cool designer Ralph Lauren is
making skull and crossbones socks, Van has limited
edition sneakers, NFY jeans is in on the trend
and so is Thomas Wylde.
* The only problem with this trend
is that once the mainstream media picks it up,
hopelessly hip hipsters will probably deem it
too mainstream to be cool. If that’s the
case, keep on the look-out for the next cool trend
to hit. I’ll keep you posted on its next
incarnation.
