CAROLYN EGAN OF
THE TOBE REPORT GAVE HER ANNUAL FASHION TREND
REPORT AT MAGIC
Carolyn
Egan, creative director of the Tobe Report, gave
a fashion presentation at the Magic Show. Egan
has been covering the European shows (and the
domestic fashion markets) for many years and is
a woman in the fashion know. We thought we would
share it with you.
Egan used four FALL - WINTER themes:
The Shire – Authentic
country dressing in places such as England, Scotland
and Wales tell the story. A rustic formality is
a major theme here with nubby tweeds, signature
plaids, intricate knitwear and natural dyed colors.
The Bond Girl: She is the New
Age Bond Girl, she is sexy and savvy (aren’t
we all). She is today’s woman; she lives
for adventure and spontaneity. More modern than
mod, she is tech as well.
Neo Philiacs: This is the fringe
culture (many hat wearers here) that blends punk,
Goth, hippie and grunge. It’s “beat
meets street,” “rockabilly meets South
Philly.” “They move beyond the boundary
of acceptable into a new uncharted realm (hat
lovers here for sure).
Byzantium: From Persia, the
Silk Road, the Ottoman Empire and Marco Polo.
“The arrival of wonderful riches to Europe
…and the empires of the near East,”
this includes: luxurious fabrics and collectables.
Trends to note (that will affect
headwear business): Look for tartans and tweeds.
Colors are rust, citrus green, plum and blue-gray.
For holiday this means jacquard kits, emblems,
crest detail, chain and watch fobs, sheer overlays,
ethnic fair isle, argyle, ruffles, military looks
(officer jackets) buttons as trim, Mongolian lamb
fur trim, velvet, tortoise chain, equestrian motifs,
gun metal gray colors, industrial hardware, raw
edges, patent leather (where are all the patent
leather visors with straw brim), head-to-toe white.
