CELEBRATED HAT DESIGNER LILLY DACHE EXHIBIT AT FIT

The exhibit, Lilly Daché : Glamour at the Drop of a Hat, is at the Museum of the Fashion Institute of Technology through April 21st.

Daché came to the US from France in 1924 with $13 in her pocket and built a fashion empire of ready-to-wear, fragrances, gloves and hats.

The exhibit showcases rare Daché garments, sketches and photographs from the Special Collections of FIT’s Gladys Marcus Library. It illustrates her glamorous personality and legendary “rags to riches” story.

Born in 1896 in Beigles, France, Daché studied millinery at Caroline Reboux and J. Suzanne Talbot in Paris. She moved to New York and opened her first millinery shop in 1924. Her fashion empire flourished, attracting celebrity clients like Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich, Carmen Miranda and Jean Harlow.

Dache received a plaque on the Seventh Avenue Fashion Walk of Fame, was the recipient of the Neiman Marcus Award and the Coty Fashion Critics Award. She also wrote two books, “Talking Through My Hats” and “Lilly Daché ’s Glamour Book.”

The Museum at FIT is at 7th Ave. at 27th Street in NYC. Admission is free. For information: (212) 217-5800 or visit www.fitnyc.edu/museum.
