TUDOR PLACE has a cultural history spanning from
the Federal period to the late 20th century. The
5 ½ acre Georgetown estate was owned by
the Peter family from 1805 to 1984 (six generations
in all) and was host to numerous dignitaries in
American history: the Calhoun’s, Jackson’s,
Webster’s, Lafayette’s and the Lee’s.
The Tudor Place Garden has brilliant foliage,
sculptures and fountains. Extensive archival documentation
tells of slaves who greeted family and visitor’s
at the door and served food in the dining room.
Thomas Peter, son of the first mayor of Georgetown
and his wife Martha Custis, granddaughter of Martha
Washington, purchased the 8 ½-acre city
lot in 1805 with an $8,000 legacy from George
Washington.
This National Historic Landmark, at 1644 31st
Street, NW is an example of American neoclassical
architecture and was designed by Dr. William Thornton.
