HAT MUSEUM IN
ENGLAND WINS THE MANCHESTER TOURISM AWARD FOR
BEST SMALL VISITOR ATTRACTION

The Hat Museum, called Hat Works, was developed
from a lottery funded by a project in Stockport,
of one Manchester, England’s leading hat
towns. They have classes, exhibits and historical
references from early 19th century hat experiences.
The museum - that opened in 2000 - is an interactive
visitor attraction in a restored Victorian Mill
that was once a thriving hat factory. They also
have a hat book library, available to researchers
Monday to Friday, by appointment. A collection
of related documents and hat ephemera may also
be viewed by appointment. These relate mainly
to the local men’s fur felt hat industry.
Copying facilities are available, within UK copyright
guidelines. Call: 0161 355 8008 for an appointment.
“Live demonstrations of working machinery
combined with an extensive collection of hats
and stimulating audio-visual shows create an experience,
which is thought provoking, educational and fun,”
said Samantha Tavernor, Hat Works Manager.
