| HOT FLASHES FROM
THE FASHION FRONT
We hear that fashionable shorts are making the
summer scene for men. Designers Miuccia Prada,
Dries van Noten, Raf Simons and Thom Browne showed
knee-length shorts with matching jackets (I see
visions of the dandy re-created).
According to the New York Times, “They
must be worn stylishly, with good-life classics
like well-shined loafers or lace-ups, a beautiful
dress shirt, a light cardigan or a V-neck sweater
and a good watch.
“The customer is definitely buying dressier
shorts this year,” said Kevin Harter, the
men’s wear director of Bloomingdale’s.
“These are a lot more versatile than cargo
shorts, which we’re seeing less and less.
My guess is that you’ll see these shorts
in a lot of social situations — cocktail
parties at the beach or in the city. They’re
really chic to wear out to dinner where you can
sit and eat outside.”
This could very well be the accessory appetizer
for the main course…Hats. The casual elegance
of menswear shorts lends itself to fedoras and
other hats.
SILVER
SHINES FOR SPRING
Glitz and glamour are showing up for daytime in
the form of silver accessories. Bill Cunningham
of the New York Times photographed women en mass
carrying silver tote bags, platform shoes and
satchels with quilt texture.
Also looking good: iridescent gun metals and
pewter leathers. That means more visors with silver
and pewter bills. It also means logos in silver
and gold and crest detail on the side of hats.
This is a great trend for summer.
It seems that the Eric Javits visor that was
copied by Wal-Mart is a big seller. I noticed
this straw visor cap with large bill and gold
button trim has been reordered a few times (FYI).
I would like to see more of these visor styles
with patent leather, silver and gold bills.

THREE
CHEERS TO THE NEW ELECTRIC CASSEL GOORIN CATALOGUE
We just received the new Electric Line catalogue
from Goorin. This eclectic, yet youthful collection
has taken tattoo artistry to the top with a line
of whimsical hats and caps. The models have tattoos,
the hats are tattooed and the catalogue has attitude.
Color and style are everywhere in this Medieval
and aristocratic brown and gold book. It combines
elegance and hip with the right amount of irreverence
and idiosyncrasy.
The hats look terrific as well. If young people
like to dance to their own beat, then the new
Electric Line catalogue will be music to their
ears. Remember, this is not your father’s
generation – Goorin can prove it!
