HAT EXHIBIT TO BE HELD IN COHASSET MASSACHUSETTES

The exhibit, “A Century of Hats,” starts on June 1st and will be at the Pratt Building. It will feature hats from 1860 to 1960, as well as parasols, hatboxes, beaded handbags and silk gloves.

“Life has changed, fashion has changed, that’s what makes this exhibit so important,” said Jean Hajjar, co-curator of the exhibit. “In the past when women bought an outfit, a hat was part of the ensemble.”

“Every box we opened was a treasure,” says Hajjar. “There is a faux horsehair hat called a pyroxaline from the late 1800s and a large “leghorn” bonnets circa 1860. They all have their own story. You can almost see the person wearing it.”

“Hats have a history,” says Hajjar, “Women would hardly ever be seen without something on their head, women wore hats from day wear to nightwear.”

The Historical Society will open the “Century of Hats” exhibit on June 1 with a cocktail party. Attendees are encouraged to join in the spirit of the exhibit by wearing a favorite or special hat.

The exhibit is free of charge and goes until August. Call the Cohasset Historical Society at (781) 383-1434 for information.
