THE FASHION INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY CELEBRATES LUXURY

The FIT exhibit, called Luxury, examines the meaning of luxury and how it has changed in the past 250 years. Over 150 garments, accessories and textiles from the museum's permanent collection will be on display from today until Nov. 10.

"It seems that luxury has become a buzzword in our culture,'' said museum director Valerie Steele. "While there are a lot of different ideas about what luxury entails, there's also been a lot of discussion about old stealth luxury. There are all types of luxury - democratic and proletarian. Luxury is a phenomenon and an important concept."

Designs by Paul Poiret, whose work is in the "King of Fashion" exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, will be among those featured in "Luxury." Items from Chanel, Christian Dior, Charles Worth and other couturiers will be shown at the exhibit as well as accessories from Hermès and Lanvin.

The exhibit will examine haute couture from the 19th century and look at the marketing of luxury to the masses.

The exhibits at the FIT Museum are well worth the trip – and always evoke creative and exhuberant memories. Enjoy!
