KITSCH COMES TO PARIS

Jean Paul Gaultier brought the high seas to the Paris runway for spring ’08. His pirate-inspired fashion show had some tall hat tales to tell (which is good news for all).

“The designer “plundered”, as he put it, from the military, turning his corsairs into sexy, female versions of Johnny Depp in breeches, braided jackets, frock-coats and wench-style corsetry all made in camouflage print.”

There were striped T-shirts slashed open across the décolletage, wide worn leather belts over chiffon and ostrich feather crinoline skirts and black tulle tutus in place over camouflage leggings.

Battered leather boots and tricorn hats were fashioned from straw sunhats, skewered with huge pins.

The show’s finale featured thirteen pirate brides in white lace, crochet, tulle, silk and leather with veils trailing from pirate hats.
