ONE MORE MILLINERY STORE BITES THE DUST

We all know that times have changed – but we didn’t expect our favorite hat supplier to close its doors. Manny’s Millinery on 26 West 38th Street will be closing at the end of November - beginning of December 2007.

In case you missed visiting Manny’s, this retail hat supplier was both a place to explore the inner workings of the hat- making business and a place to buy hats. It is an old-fashioned business (reminiscent of a kindler gentler era). It was old world in design and function. It was one of the only businesses that kept its original design and down home customer service. You could buy the Hat Magazine (from England), as well as flowers, ribbons and baubles to trim a hat. It was a place to browse and take in history.

And save your tears – they say progress is good. As for me, I am sad that another favorite hot spot for us traditionalists will be closing. Another example of the good old days – but I suppose those days are gone.

And what do we have in its place - Lots of iPods, emails, 22-year-old snippy sales people, bright lights, steel and chrome, attitude and text messaging.

The history of Manny’s goes like this: Howard Reinlieb’s father Manny worked for his uncle Ben Horowitz (who was a jobber). The business was founded in 1948 (and it was located at 63 West 38th Street) and then Manny passed away in 1990. Howard (who has worked at Manny’s since 1976) took over the business, and in 1992 he moved it from 63 West 38th Street to its current location at 26 West 38th Street.

The rest is history. Howard, who is also in real estate, is retiring. So we say “Goodbye” to history, hello to the Internet. Another good one bites the dust. I’m just glad Casey Bush is not here to see it. May they both rest in peace.
