Are Hats for Men Just Like Bags for Women?

“Once hats had the role of a status symbol and were part of a uniform, in order to today become a way of individual fashion expression.

There is fierce competition in the fashion industry, and the fashion houses have realized that a lot of potential earnings lie in fashion accessories. So alongside their regular lines of clothing, they offer sunglasses, shoes, scarves, jewelery, and of course the most profitable female accessory – bags. Burberry has recently entered the world of fashion accessories by opening a store called Icon, where only fashion accessories will be sold.

This is how Burberry intends on competing with the fashion house Louis Vuitton, whose business in the field of fashion accessories is simply blooming. The fashion houses Alberta Ferretti and Nina Ricci have similar plans, and have become aware that designing a hit bag has the power to catapult a brand to star status. Bags are one of the favorite fashion accessories for women, but the question is being asked: what is the male equivalent of the bag? Which fashion accessory could become a hit for men?

Hats as a new trend amongst men

If the recently shown men’s collections by big designer labels in Milan, London, New York and Paris are anything to go by then men’s fashion should be ruled by hats, as early as the next autumn/winter 2008/2009 season. Nearly unavoidable on the catwalks were male models with various hats on their heads. They could be seen in collections by John Galliano, Yohji Yamamoto, Alexander McQueen, Vivienne Westwood and others.

Designers have proposed a new trend, but considering the conservative approach of today’s men towards fashion trends, maybe a head covering is a bite that is too hard to swallow. Even though hats were placed on the heads of gentlemen in suits during past times, maybe those softer, less folded felt hats will find their way onto the heads of modern men.

Hats have existed from almost the beginning of time, it is impossible to say when the first animal skins were pulled over heads for protection from the climatic elements, however, Since then, hats have had the role of status symbol, an integral part of uniform again often showing status, now, finally in order to become a way of fashion expression.

Even if they do not become a fashion hit during the next autumn/winter season, we do not fear that they will disappear from the fashion scene.
