THE EASTER PARADE ON FIFTH AVENUE IN NEW YORK CITY WAS BRIMMING WITH HATS

It was a colorful day filled with sunshine – Easter’s Finest

We got lucky this year – Easter weekend fell upon us as we exited the Headwear Association dinner. That meant that the Hat Life roving reporter (me) got to take some shots at the hat action on Fifth Avenue. There were lots of fancy hats, crazy hats, outrageous hats and some mad hatters.

There was a hat contest at Tavern on the Green sponsored by Tavern on the Green (site of the dinner) and it was temperate and sunny this year. If you remember last year it snowed on Easter Day.

We met Mark Haldeman from Paul Smith in the UK, Don and Kate Biondi of Greenwich Headwear in Australia (they were in the US for the headwear dinner and to see some hatters), John Callanan of Dorfman Pacific (he was out and under the weather), hat film maker and hatter Andee Kinzy and Gloria Jelks from Texas (in NYC for a meeting) who said her husband told her she had to stop buying hats so she divorced him (smart woman).

There were hats made of sugar bunnies, hats made of faux carrots, metro card hats, and hats in the shape of bridges, buildings, towers, and bells and whistles. It was fun and furious, as Easter hats should be.

There were crowds around a group of sophisticates who donned 40’s apparel. Cameras were flashing everywhere and the compulsion to snap had Bill Cunningham of the New York Times looking diminutive. When I snapped his picture he winced and ran away.

Happy Holiday to all of you and I’ll see you next year.
