STOCKPORT HAT WORKS HAT MUSEUM IN THE UK UNVEILS THE SPIRIT OF AFRICA: WEST AFRICAN HEAD CRAFT CULTURE EXHIBIT

The exhibition, put together in association with the African Arts and Culture Promotion Network, will open on February 9th.

This colorful exhibition examines the rich culture of headwear and hair styles from West Africa. In the African culture headwear was worn as a way of sending a message to others. Because of this, many have of the hats have interesting stories connected to them. Others are simply symbols of fashion and beauty.

Visitors can see beautiful fabrics, intricate beading and a variety of vibrant head wraps with information panels and accompanying photographs.

On Sunday March 30th visitors can meet the Exhibition Artists from African Arts and the Culture Promotion Network. This free event called Flavour Fusion will take place from 1 to 5pm. Visitors can sample West Africa food, watch hair braiding techniques and take part in craft workshops.

The exhibition will be on display until May 11, 2008. Entry is free and there are activities such as trying on headgear and practicing traditional hair braiding.
