HENRI BENDEL TO STOP SELLING CLOTHING THIS SUMMER

It comes as no surprise that Bendel’s will concentrate on more whimsical accessory items instead of the “big stuff.” The recession demanded that $1000 shirts and $2000 jackets be put on the back burner.

According to reports, “Henri Bendel, is planning to stop selling clothes this summer and focus on accessories and beauty products as it struggles to lure shoppers during a prolonged recession.”

“Bendel decided to eliminate the fashion departments because there was no sign of a turnaround in the sale of high-ticket items, but that beauty and gift products were selling well and typically with much higher margins.” (Duh, a $20 headband and a $400 necklace were on the main floor when I was there and women were loving them).

Bendel, a division of Limited Brands, is changing its business model, from the department store that was founded in 1895 to a more mall-like chain selling Bendel-branded beauty and gift items, like an $18 box of tea in the company’s signature brown-and-white stripes. (just what we all need – oh yes, we can sleep in them).

The company said it is making the changes as a way to expand the Henri Bendel brand. Six accessories-only stores will open this year in shopping centers nationwide.

“A spokeswoman for Limited Brands would not make its executives available for comment.” (Hello, they never do).

Hats off to this decision – perhaps they will buy more hats.
