THE MENSWEAR SHOWS IN MILAN WERE A SIGN OF THE TIMES

Alexander McQueen collection

Issey Miyake Fall 2010 Milan Runway show

War, Goth symbols, fur, hoods and prints made a bold fashion statement in Milan at the 2010 menswear runway shows

Designer Thom Browne (Moncler for Gamme Bleu) showed padded jackets, parkas, duffle coats and waterproof pants in bright primary colors.

Brioni added a detachable fur collar on a coat, leather lattice on a sweater and grosgrain lapels on a velvet jacket.

At Burberry there were military aviator jackets with fleece on the outside and leather bands at the hems. There were buttons on shoulders and cuffs making military chic (tell that to the troops).

Bottega Veneta  showed blouson jackets and nylon trousers

Giorgio Armani

At Giorgio Armani velvet was the mainstay. But it didn’t stop them from calling their new fashion direction one of “military romanticism.” This was accomplished with neoprene linings on leather car coats, quilted down jackets and monochromatic colors.

At Gianfranco Ferré there were leather dickeys reminiscent of medieval breastplates and knee-length vests made of fur and quilted cotton.

Gucci showed skinny trousers zippered at the ankle with snaps at the cuff and silk jacquard evening jackets.

Milan Fashion stats from Rod Hagwood of the Sun Sentinel:

Prada - Clash of the Patterns. Think Brady Bunch.

Gucci - '70s turtlenecks under blazers and equestrian-tight trousers.

Bottega Veneta - Rockabilly hair and Mad-Max-meets-Mad-Men clothing.

Ferragamo - Swathed gauchos.
