EAT DRINK
AND BE MERRY IN NANTUCKET
By Jack Benjamin (guest reviewer and
foodie)
There are many high profile restaurants on the
Tony island of Nantucket, but few can match the
beautifully crafted dishes presented at this intimate
gem, located o n the outskirts of town. Ron Suhanosky,
the chef and owner, with his wife Colleen, the
pastry chef, have created a Trattoria that offers
wonderful classical Italian fare. On our last
visit to Sfoglia, we were fortunate enough to
try out their new July menu. We started off with
Colleen’s unique tasty and crispy textured
“focaccia bread”–it doesn’t
get any better-- which perfectly complemented
the Pappardelle alla Bolognese served with a savory
sauce of finely chopped veal. The Polenta , also
on the primi section of the menu, was bursting
with the great flavor of spiced lentils and pepperoncino.
We tried the Chicken alla Mattone and the Striped
Bass with roasted sweet tomato 100's, sea urchin
roe and olive oil (the fish of the day) featured
on the Secondi section of the menu. The Chicken
was cooked under a brick until the skin was a
crispy golden brown–a truly sumptuous tasting
dish. Since Striped Bass is the native summer
fish of Nantucket, many of the restaurants on
the island offer it. That being said, the combination
of Sweet tomato 100's and perfectly roasted lemon
roasted bass brought this delicately prepared
fish to another level. Colleen’s deserts
are always excellent . That night would she didn’t
disappoint. We ordered the special fruit- filled
crostadas - the fresh raspberry and rhubarb with
homemade vanilla bean ice cream was a grand slam
home- run. Sfoglia has a modest priced Italian
wine list. We fond some nice white wines from
the Piedmonti Region.. Remember cash or check
only and closed on Sunday. Only open for dinner.
