VENTURA’S GREENHOUSE GRILL: FOOD FOR FANTASY

If you happen to be on your way to Atlantic City New Jersey, we have a sure port in the storm. Called Ventura’s Greenhouse Grill, this Italian restaurant knows how to serve up excellent home-made Italian cuisine guaranteed to please your palette.

In the nearby beach town of Margate New Jersey, Ventura’s is well known to many as the home of Lucy the Elephant. This 65-foot sculpture (that sits next to Ventura’s) was built in 1882 and still stands tall among its gentrified neighborhood. Ventura’s also has an illustrious past. It was a speakeasy during the prohibition days of the 30’s, and has survived two major storms. Perhaps it’s the history that motivates owner Lou Ventura and his staff to please it patrons with great Italian fare.

We heard about Ventura’s great mussels and we weren’t disappointed. Served in a huge bowl with marinara sauce, this seafaring appetizer was delicious. Four of us were licking our fingers and groping for mussels at the speed of light. But it was only a warm-up for my specially prepared entrée Veal Chop Alla Milanese. Also impressive, the Jumbo Shrimp Aurora (what’s in a name) made with huge shrimp sautéed with mushrooms, sundried tomatoes, basil and shallots, flamed in vodka and then simmered in a marinara sauce with a touch of cream. Served over penne pasta this dish was joyful and flavorful, something you might even dream about. We also sampled the Veal Ventura, which is veal sautéed in white bread crumbs, topped with arugula and tomato concasse, then served with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Our guests had the Sesame Crusted Salmon, but they thought it was a bit overcooked.

Dessert brought chocolate cake and lots of good vibes. The service is great (servers were very helpful and cheerful); the atmosphere is upbeat and delightful. It’s a place to celebrate life, love and the great culinary arts. See you there!
