THE GOLD
STANDARD: We hear that “Hippie
Chic” from the flower- powered
60’s is rearing its head again. This time
fashion editors say it has a 21st century twist.
Even hippie sandals a la Birkenstock have returned
with gold and silver leather straps. Apparently
Michael Kors is showing them in brights and gold
(check out www.shopkitson.com)
Our roving reporter and
good- will ambassador at the Accessories the show
in NYC was Joan Bernard. We asked Joan
to give us her opinion on the show’s fashion
offerings. “The latest spring hat trends
were: bright hues of pink, yellow, red, blue and
multi-colored floral and geometric prints. Fun
yet functional was the theme. Cotton, knit and
straw hats were accented with satin bows, ribbons
or crochet flowers worn to the side. Also important:
Bright colored faux fur trimmed hats, felts, fedoras
and cloches in teal, vibrant rust, deep rich reds,
mocha browns, purples and plums. Classic cloche
hats in wool, cashmere and knit had a vintage
feel reminiscent of the 1920’s and 30’s
but with a contemporary feel.” If anyone
needs an assistant to help out at trade shows

WOMEN ARE FLIPPING FOR
FLOWERS: Large floppy flower pins and
appliqués are now being worn on apparel.
Smart designers are also attaching them to the
side of hats. In contrast color or tonal hues,
these oversized flowers give headwear a nice panache.
As for men, forgetaboutit.
