Minnesota man collects
12,000 hats….talk about mad hatters!:
A southern Minnesota man is on a quest to land
a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records.
Buckey Legried of Frost, Minnesota, has collected
over 70,000 baseball caps. Iowa. A friend recently
gave him 12,000 more. "He called me up one
day and he said 'Buckey, I've got these caps in
my house and my wife has said if the caps don't
go, she's gonna' go. I'd kind of like to live
with her a little bit longer, so I think you better
come and get the caps.'" Legried's
cap collection is twice as large as the current
record, and is kept in two 48-foot semi- trailers
on his farm. It all started in 1970.
"Up on the shelf, there was a dozen caps
and they were all different colors and I said
to myself, you know, this looks like kind of an
interesting hobby to start collecting caps."
Legried is trying to get a cap from each state
with the state name on it. If people want to donate
caps, they can call him at 800-788-6484.
HELYN COEN, hat and
dress designer from Cincinnati, Ohio
passed away at age 94. She operated Hats by Helyn
in downtown Cincinnati from 1930 till 1977. Her
son, Reed Coen said she made hats for Eleanor
Roosevelt and gowns for ladies who were presented
to the Queen of England. Some of Coen's hats are
part of the Cincinnati Art Museum's collection.
"You could spot one of her hat boxes a block
away because they were unique. Decorated with
zebra stripes, the boxes themselves have become
collector's items,” said her son. Coen hated
the modern way of not wearing hats. She complained
that she "felt undressed without the hat,
but no one else wore one."
