OIL FOR HATS
We recently heard from Karen Karlberg, owner
of Hats & Jewels, a boutique near the Berkshires
in Lee Massachusetts. The shop is located
near the Tanglewood Music Festival, Summer Theater
Festivals, Jacobs Pillow Dance and museums. According
to Karlberg, “Normally I do quite well selling
hat sales to this customer. But this summer I have
seen hat sales plummet to the lowest level in 15
years. I have been asking women who come to my shop
and only look, why they are not buying hats. They
tell, ‘Hats are a luxury item, even the cheaper
ones, and I do not have money to spend on luxuries
this year because of gas prices.’ I wonder
if this is happening in other hat shops.”
